Epoxy flooring in Charlesbourg.
North of the city, around the Trait-Carré.
Charlesbourg is one of the oldest settlements in the region: its Trait-Carré dates back to the French Regime. But most of the homes you see there today are suburban single-family houses with a single or double garage. In those garages the enemy is winter: the road salt and meltwater that sit under the car eat away at bare concrete.
The area
A vinyl-flake floor sealed with polyaspartic closes off the surface. Salty water sits on top instead of soaking into the concrete, and it comes off with a squeegee. The photo shows the step we never skip: everything gets vacuumed before the next coat, so nothing ends up trapped in the finish.
The basement is the other room where epoxy pays off: easy to wash, brighter than grey concrete, no joints for dust to collect in. Before pouring, we check the slab's moisture. A basement that wicks water has to be fixed first, not after.
